Lloyd Potter, MPH, PhD

Dr. Potter also serves as Director of the Suicide Prevention Resource Center at EDC, which is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). He is leading an effort to create internet-based course offerings using the World Health Organization’s TEACH-VIP curricula. Dr. Potter has authored and co-authored numerous publications on the topics of suicide and youth violence prevention. Among other awards, he is a recipient of the Surgeon General’s Award of Exemplary Service for his work in advancing the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. Prior to joining EDC, Dr. Potter managed the youth violence and suicide prevention efforts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. His current work focuses upon providing assistance to state and local public health practitioners in their efforts to develop and implement efforts to prevent suicide, violence, and unintentional injury.

In addition to serving as CSN Deputy Director, Ms. Miara directs the Young Worker Safety Resource Center, funded by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; and is Principal Investigator of the Educación de seguridad en el tránsito (Education for Traffic Safety) project, which is funded by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to develop culturally appropriate traffic safety materials for Latinos. Prior to coming to EDC, Ms. Miara served as Technical Assistance Coordinator for the WIC Program of the Massachusetts Maternal and Child Health Office.
Ellen Schmidt, MS, OTR

Ms. Schmidt has a long and distinguished career in injury prevention. She has served as Chair of the Healthy School Environment Sub-Committee of the Health, Mental Health, and Safety in Schools Project of the American Academy of Pediatrics and National Association of School Nurses; Co-Chair of the Health and Safety Sub-Committee of the National Bullying Prevention Campaign; a member of the Infrastructure Workgroup of CDC's Advisory Committee for Injury Prevention and Control; Co-Chair of WHO's International Safe Schools Committee; and Vice-Chair of the American School Health Association's Injury and Violence Prevention Council. She is Founding President of the State and Territorial Injury Prevention Directors Association (STIPDA) and Executive Committee member and Chair of STIPDA's State Technical Assessment Team Committee. Prior to coming to EDC, Ms. Schmidt served as Management and Program Analyst at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and founder and Director of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Injury Prevention Program.
Jennifer Allison, MPH

Before joining the Children’s Safety Network, Ms. Allison was the Assistant Director of the Center for Community Health and Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where she supervised an array of community health programs focusing on youth development and women’s health. Previously, she did government and foundation fundraising at AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, served as the Director of Funds Development and the Interim Executive Director of Metropolitan Boston Housing Partnership, and was the Director of Grants and Program Development at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. Ms. Allison has a BA in women’s studies from the College of Wooster and a PhD in political science from Brandeis University.
Malia Richmond-Crum, MPH

Before joining CSN, Ms. Richmond-Crum worked as a Project Director for the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs where she was responsible for overseeing communications projects and writing and editing publications on maternal and child health policy and programming issues. In addition, while in graduate school she worked for the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood coordinating a national working group on emergency preparedness and pregnant women and infants.

In addition to serving as CSN State Outreach Specialist, Ms. Streit-Kaplan is Project Manager of EDC's Educación de seguridad en el tránsito project, which addresses the high rate of traffic-related injuries among Spanish speakers by evaluating existing educational materials and creating guidelines for developing culturally appropriate materials. Prior to coming to EDC, she served as Community Health Promotion Coordinator at the Massachusetts General Hospital and other Boston-area community health centers.
Lisa McCarthy, MPH

Lisa McCarthy is a State Outreach Specialist for the Children’s Safety Network National Injury and Violence Prevention Resource Center at the Education Development Center (EDC). In this role she provides technical assistance to selected state health departments in the area of injury and violence prevention. In addition, she is the suicide prevention topic specialist and the liaison to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC). Prior to her current position, Ms. McCarthy provided technical assistance to ten states as a Prevention Specialist for the SPRC (also located at EDC). Before coming to EDC, she worked at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) in the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program and in Sexual Assault Prevention and Survivor Services. She has a BS degree in Women’s Health with public health concentration and a MPH with a community health education concentration, both from the University of Massachusetts.
Christian L. Hanna, MPH

Prior to joining the Michigan Public Health Institute, Mr. Hanna worked at CSN’s Rural Center at the Marshfield Clinic, where he served as a state outreach specialist and content expert on rural communities, agricultural injuries to children and youth, and suicide. Chris serves as SOS to the Midwest states and as liaison to the National Child Death Review Resource Center, which is also located at MPHI.
Ronda Zakocs, PhD, MPH
Technical Expert on Program Evaluation
In addition to serving as CSN’s technical expert on program evaluation, Dr. Zakocs is a faculty member for the Department of Public Health at Oregon State University and the Boston University School of Public Health. She has conducted research, published, and taught numerous workshops on program evaluation and a variety of injury topics, and participated in the systematic review process for CDC’s Task Force for Community Preventive Services.

Mr. Posner has been at EDC for 25 years and serves as Senior Writer for three EDC technical assistance centers: CSN, the National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention, and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. He has worked on numerous injury and violence prevention projects at EDC, developed and led the workshop series Telling Your Story: A Marketing and Communications Skills Workshop for Traffic Safety and Public Health Professionals, and authored and co-authored numerous books and publications, including Working Together for Safety: A State Team Approach to Preventing Occupational Injuries to Young People; Paving the Road to Health Together: Case Studies of Interagency Collaboration; and Preventing School Injuries: A Comprehensive Guide for School Administrators, Teachers, and Staff.

In addition to her responsibilities for CSN, Ms. Simon serves as Library Assistant for two other EDC projects, the National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. Prior to coming to EDC, Ms. Simon was a librarian in her native country of Russia and edited technical publications on agriculture and transportation.

Monique Sheppard, Ph.D.

In addition to directing CSN-EDARC, Dr. Sheppard provides data and cost analyses to facilitate efforts to prevent child and adolescent injury and violence and is involved in a project to estimate the number of poisoning incidents in the United States. Prior to her work at CSN-EDARC, Dr. Sheppard served as program coordinator of the Baltimore City Health Department's injury prevention and domestic violence program and as an injury epidemiologist at the Maryland Department of Health.

Dr. Miller founded the CSN Economics and Insurance Resource Center (now CSN-EDARC) and is a leading expert on the incidence, costs ,and consequences of injury, violence, and substance abuse. Dr. Miller also directs the Public Services Research Institute at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation.

In addition to serving as a CSN-EDARC technical assistance specialist, Dr. Jones has presented on topics including injury diagnosis, classification and prevention; childhood injury epidemiology, costs, surveillance and prevention; and the incidence and costs associated with poisonings in the Northeast.
Dexter Taylor, Ph.D.

Dr. Taylor is a CSN-EDARC technical assistance specialist, working on topics including suicide, underage drinking, and injury morbidity and mortality. In addition to his work with CSN-EDARC, Dr. Taylor conducts research at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation on the effect of college sports fandom on alcohol consumption, post-game riots, and alcohol-related problems.
