At first glance, selecting an appropriate outcome indicator for a program or evaluation seems straightforward. A violence prevention initiative has been implemented, so compare the rates of violence before and after the program started. However, one may need to consider issues of relevancy, comparability and temporality in the process of selecting a suitable indicator. Even data availability itself can sometimes be a factor.
