October issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health is focused on bullying research

This journal issue includes the following research articles on bullying.

School bullying among adolescents in the United States: Physical, verbal, relational, and cyber” is a major national study described in the CSN Newsletter and on the CSN website last July as an epub ahead of print.
“Income inequality and school bullying: Multilevel study of adolescents in 37 countries” describes a study that tested associations between income inequality and bullying among countries.

Researchers used economic data from the 2006 United Nations Development Program Human Development Report and survey data from the 2005/2006 Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) study which included 66, 910 11-year-olds in 37 countries.

Countries with high income inequality have more school bullying among preadolescents than countries with low income inequality.

The authors suggest that adolescents residing in areas of wide income inequality - not only those in deprived schools and neighborhoods - should be a focus of antibullying campaigns.

CSN will provide copies of the article to state Maternal and Child Health and state public health staff on request: csn@edc.org

“Evaluation of an intervention program for anxious adolescent boys who are bullied at school”
describes a study that tested the efficacy of such an intervention.

The intervention was effective in significantly reducing adolescents’ bullying experiences as well as their anxiety, depression, and the degree of distress associated with being bullied.
