The effects of childhood stress on health across the lifespan

This Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report summarizes the available research on childhood stress and its long-term consequences, in particular the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, a collaboration between the CDC and Kaiser Permanente’s Health Appraisal Clinic in San Diego.

CDC is particularly interested in the stress caused by child maltreatment. An estimated 8,755,000 juvenile victims live in this country. That means that more than 1 of 7 children between the ages of 2 and 17 years have experienced maltreatment. The ACE Study demonstrates a strong link between child maltreatment and risky behaviors and health problems in adulthood. The report provides prevention practitioners with ideas about how to incorporate this important information into their work.

This publication is an excellent resource for MCH programs with a state performance measures on child abuse, as well as other professionals involved in the prevention of child abuse.
