State updates:

Massachusetts is implementing “buddy benches” in middle schools – spreading from Haverhill schools to Fitchburg. They have 15 grantees for the Olweus program to pilot the virtual training, and the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) project is being implemented in Fitchburg-area schools. In addition, they hired a consultant to work w DESE to create 7 anti-bullying tip sheets focused on peers who bully, youth who are bullied, youth who engage in bullying, how to talk to school administrators, community members and parents/caregivers.

In Pennsylvania, they will be renewing their grant agreement to run through December 31st, 2023. They continue to implement thee Olweus Bullying Prevention Program with 11 organizations throughout the state.

The Wisconsin team reported that for National Bullying Prevention Month, they are launching three new campaigns to increase youth participation in messaging to raise awareness of cyberbullying. Children’s provides a kit to help student leaders to design and implement the campaign, along with resources (posters, stickers, water bottles, key chains) to be used as information and/or incentives.  They also provide a monetary incentive to the school for completing the campaign.  As part of their regular efforts, they are working on developing and strengthening their networks with schools, and will highlight the cyberbullying campaign in their next newsletter.

A special guest from Tennessee (LaDonna Merville) joined the call to discuss their efforts to raise awareness about the connections between bullying and suicide. They created messages for social media, and always look for new ways to link their work to other sections/issues, in order to expand their dissemination and impact. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=479360164238461&set=a.231992022308611 T
