Thank you for participating in the December Bullying Prevention Topic Call last week! It was great to check in and hear what is going on in each of your states – there is a lot of impactful work happening right now.

State updates:

The Massachusetts team talked about the connections between bullying and other issues/risk factors, including school-based violence, anxiety, and trauma. They are addressing this with different programs throughout the state, including:

  • Sports-based supports to help youth with self-regulation and conflict management, infused with trauma-informed approaches to address PTSD
  • Implementation of the Mentors in Violence Prevention program
  • Training of trainers to begin implementing after-school bullying prevention programming in January (Olweus)
  • Drop-in teen programs to address personal stressors through supportive services

In Pennsylvania, six more people completed their Olweus certification. They are beginning to dig into data from youth surveys and are noting that a large percentage of students experiencing bullying identify as female. The group discussed strategies for increasing survey response rates (in PA and elsewhere) including incentives and embedding the expectations into the funding process.

In Wisconsin, the WSCA (Wisconsin School Counselor Association) conference this fall provided great connections with educators to expand their work with older youth, and an opportunity to do a presentation which generated 19 new high school leads. Other communication and outreach strategies include connecting directly with student groups as well as targeting school superintendents.

Storyboards:

Each state team should submit a CSLC storyboard no later than March 29th, 2023, to prepare for our Learning Session on April 18th and 19th. Please include the five key components - Vision, Challenges, Strategy, Progress, Next Steps– but be creative! These storyboards are an opportunity to build common understanding across the team, gain support from key partners, and get feedback and suggestions from peer teams.

Prior to our next BP Topic Call, please review your storyboard from last year, and come prepared to say a few words about how your projected next steps match (or don’t match) what you have accomplished over the past year.
