Public CDC Webinar: Overview of the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain

This is not a CSN event. Please contact the organization in charge of the event if you have any questions.

In response to the troubling opioid epidemic our nation is facing, CDC developed and released the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain in March 2016. This Guideline provides 12 recommendations for the prescribing of opioid pain medication for patients 18 and older in primary care settings based on the most current scientific evidence. Recommendations focus on the use of opioids in treating chronic pain (pain lasting longer than 3 months or past the time of normal tissue healing) outside of active cancer treatment, palliative care, and end-of-life care. Subsequent to the release of the Guideline, CDC has been pleased to work with our federal and external partners to ensure wide dissemination and uptake of the Guideline recommendations.

In an effort to imbed Guideline recommendations within education and training for providers, CDC will be hosting a seven-part webinar series about the Guideline, which will begin on Wednesday, June 22nd at 2:00pm EDT. The first webinar will provide an overview of the CDC recommendations and learn when and how opioids should be initiated for chronic pain, how to assess risk and address harms of opioid use, and when and how opioids should be discontinued. Subsequent modules will touch upon the various recommendations in the Guideline. Each one-hour webinar will be available as a live webinar broadcast and as archived recordings following the live webinars. These are free and offer continuing education credit to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, health educators, and other healthcare providers. The first four webinars are currently scheduled with the others to follow later this year:
