The goal of this State Technical Assistance Webinar was that attendees would be equipped with a comprehensive understanding of an injury equity framework and be empowered to take action to promote equitable strategies in injury prevention to keep all kids safe. Attendees learned about an injury equity framework and how it can be used to address disparities in child safety outcomes, particularly for groups that have been marginalized and underserved. Presenters also shareed experiences directing large-scale programs for building health equity.
Dawne Gardner and Dr. Sadiqa Kendi of Safe Kids Worldwide (SKW) introduced the injury equity framework as the conceptual foundation for the SKW Strategic Plan for FY24-FY26 and provided examples of work and tools driving SKW efforts to prioritize equity, identify gaps and scale data driven interventions, and create sustainable system changes. The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration was addressed.
Rebecca Bishop, MSW from Education Development Center, shared her experience directing large-scale prevention and intervention programs focused on building health equity, as well as her expertise in developing and implementing evidence-based interventions and programming, providing high-quality training and technical assistance, and leading community-based initiatives aimed at promoting health equity.
Speakers
Dawne Gardner, MBA, CPST, holds the position of Senior Manager of Equity and Child Safety at Safe Kids Worldwide. In this role, she is responsible for managing the execution of the organization's comprehensive equity and child safety strategy. Additionally, she provides guidance for the growth and advancement of Safe Kids' strategic framework to reach communities that have historically been marginalized and underserved. Dawne also oversees the Safe Kids Equity Advisory Committee. Prior to joining Safe Kids Worldwide, she worked for over 15 years in injury prevention at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio. During this time, she focused on the development and implementation of prevention programs in underserved and marginalized communities. Her focused work played a significant role in eliminating disparities and addressing barriers to childhood injury prevention. As a result, there have been measurable decreases in the frequency of pediatric unintentional injuries treated in local emergency rooms in the area.
Sadiqa Kendi, MD, MPH, FAAP, CPST is a pediatric emergency medicine physician and associate professor of pediatrics at Boston Medical Center and the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Dr. Kendi is an injury prevention researcher with a focus on equity. Dr. Kendi graduated AOA in 2006 from the Yale School of Medicine. She received her pediatrics training from the Social Pediatrics Program at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, where she spent an additional year as a pediatric chief resident. She completed her fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and her MPH training as a Bloomberg American Health Initiative Fellow at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Rebecca Bishop, MSW is a public health professional with over 14 years of experience in directing large-scale prevention and intervention programs focused on building health equity. She has experience leading a hospital-based violence prevention program, managing substance misuse prevention services for an urban municipality, and directing the first technical assistance center in the U.S. focused on problem gambling prevention where she pioneered a training academy that focused on problem gambling prevention, prevention science, and equitable practices. She is an expert in developing and implementing evidence-based interventions and programming, providing high-quality training and technical assistance, and leading community-based initiatives aimed at promoting health equity. She is an experienced public speaker and facilitator, skilled in managing cross-functional teams, communicating among cultures, and making critical decisions during challenges; she received her BA from Post University and her MSW from Boston College.
