States are implementing a number of legal and policy initiatives to address the prescription drug overdose epidemic, now the second leading cause of injury death nationwide. This webinar focuses on the range of policy initiatives to reduce prescription opioid medication abuse and the experiences of one state in developing and implementing their rules. First, Corey Davis of the Network for Public Health Law will provide a brief overview of some of these initiatives including prescription monitoring programs, "Good Samaritan" laws and laws intended to increase availability and use of naloxone, a drug that can reverse opioid overdose. Second, Kristi Weeks of the Washington Department of Health will discuss the challenges and opportunities of implementing Washington's rules for managing chronic noncancer pain with opioids, including working with providers, stakeholders and the Legislature.
