Definition: This includes underage alcohol consumption and illicit drug abuse. 

Magnitude of the Problem: In a 2011 survey of high school students (CDC 2011 YRBS):

  • 22% reported binge drinking regularly and 39% reported having at least one drink in the past 30 days
  • 8% reported driving after drinking within the past 30 days
  • 23% reported using marijuana regularly and 40% reported using marijuana at least once in their lifetime
  • 7% reported using a form of cocaine at least once in their lifetime, 4% reported using methamphetamines at least once in their lifetime, 11% reported using inhalants at least once in their lifetime, 8% reported using ecstasy/MDMA at least once in their lifetime, and 9% reported using hallucinogenic drugs at least once in their lifetime
