Drowning is the leading cause of death among 1-4 year olds, and second leading cause of unintentional injury death among children ages 5-14 years old (Drowning Data | Drowning Prevention | CDC). Preventing drowning is a year-round effort and we all have a role to play.
The Children’s Safety Network (CSN) hosted a webinar on September 24 to discuss how to prevent drowning across the socioecological model, from local to national approaches. During the webinar, Morag MacKay, Chief Research and Network Officer of Safe Kids Worldwide (SKW), presented on the U.S. National Water Safety Action Plan. Clare Grace Jones, Senior Training and Technical Assistance Associate (TTA) at Education Development Center (EDC), presented the forthcoming CSN Drowning Prevention Change Package and Outcome Measure Worksheet. CSN developed the Drowning Prevention Change Package, with input from state health departments, national partners, and the Children’s Safety Now Alliance, to include evidence-based and evidence-informed strategies and measures that could be used to prevent drowning across the socioecological model.
