Innovations in Child Maltreatment Surveillance: Using Data to Move towards Prevention Child maltreatment, often referred to as abuse and neglect, is a significant public health problem, but understanding its full magnitude poses unique challenges. Available data on the incidence of child maltreatment comes primarily from Child Protective Services (CPS) records, however, it is estimated that these records miss 57-68% of cases. Before we can create and implement effective prevention programs, it is vital to understand the numbers and populations we are working with. Attend this S2SW webinar to learn more about the issues with child maltreatment data, and about the experiences of Alaska and Wake County, North Carolina, as they’ve worked to develop a surveillance system that combines data sources to give a more complete picture of the child maltreatment problem. Join Meghan Shanahan, Ph.D. and Jared Parrish, M.S., as they discuss their work in establishing these systems in two different contexts, some of the challenges and opportunities they encountered, and ideas for next steps in child maltreatment surveillance for injury and violence prevention practitioners.
