Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Prevention Topic Call, Cohort 2, Call #4

Date
-

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our January topic call! Please find the notes below and the notes and materials here. One item that came up was a question about professional development opportunities. I have shared two here that were mentioned. Please share other upcoming conferences, events or good training resources.

Shared: Upcoming conferences for safe sleep professional development

  • We are excited to announce a new partnership between the Aaron Matthew SIDS Research Guild and the Isabel Davis Center for Safe Children. With the same focus on ending sudden, unexplained death, particularly in the pediatric population, it only makes sense that our centers combine forces to put an end to these deaths. This partnership will make its debut with our first joint conference in March 2026. This conference will replace both the SIDS Summit and the Isabel Davis Center for Safe Children Conference. We will alternate locations between Houston, TX and Seattle, WA each year, where the 2026 conference is in Houston. MARCH 16-18 Houston TX (and I believe virtual as well- conference info does not seem to be posted yet, but I will share as it is available and you can check here https://idcsc.org/ )

  • Please share other PD opportunities you are aware of!

SUID Topic Call – Meeting Summary
Date: January 22, 2026

Purpose of the Call

  • Share state updates and early-year priorities for SUID work
  • Review CSLC quality improvement (QI) framework and tools
  • Facilitate peer discussion, questions, and resource sharing

Key Highlights

  • Participants shared what is going well in their SUID work and areas for growth in 2026, including maintaining momentum, rebuilding capacity after staffing changes, and expanding partnerships.
  • Several states reported strong partner engagement and programmatic shifts that support expanded safe sleep efforts (e.g., Safe Cribs program transitions, hospital-led initiatives).
  • CSLC’s quality improvement framework was reviewed, emphasizing iterative testing (PDSA cycles), adaptation, and sustainability rather than one-time implementation.
  • Participants discussed the value of small-scale testing to improve fit, messaging, and effectiveness before statewide roll-out.

Discussion & Resource Sharing

  • Questions were raised about available SUID and safe sleep trainings; several conferences and virtual options were shared for follow-up.
  • Participants discussed the use of visual and simulation tools to explain safe sleep concepts (e.g., airflow, CO₂ rebreathing) and the challenge of translating these for parent-facing education.
  • DC Health shared early experience using infant safe sleep simulation kits in training settings to address misconceptions.
  • Interest was expressed in developing or identifying parent-friendly materials explaining infant breathing and sleep positioning.
  • Clare Grace shared an overview of the typical progression that CSLC participants progress through quality improvement processes.
