In efforts to prevent child and adolescent injuries and deaths, there is increased focus on environmental and social factors that influence injuries and health outcomes. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (Office of Minority Health, 2018) defines health equity as the attainment of the highest level of health for all people. To promote health equity, it is important to understand historical context, institutional practices, social norms, and implicit biases related to health inequity experienced by disadvantaged populations.
In this webinar, offered by CSN and the Children’s Safety Now Alliance, participants will be challenged to think differently, ask deeper questions, and consider how to approach their work through a health equity lens. Jessica Ehule, MS, MSPH, a Senior Public Health Project Coordinator at CityMatCH, will provide background information on health equity, with an emphasis on the importance of understanding social determinants of health. In addition, Ms. Ehule will discuss implicit bias and internal equity and CityMatCH’s approach to integrating health equity in their work. Sasha Mintz, MPH, is an Epidemiologist at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Ms. Mintz will share information on how her department applied a health equity lens in their child fatality work, including the use of an equity framework in their prevention recommendations to internal and external partners. Abby Collier, MS, Director of the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention, will moderate this webinar.
